– There was a great deal of rocking and reading this weekend at the Village Lights Bookstore for their third annual 24-hour reading marathon and children’s book drive. Donated books went to the Clearinghouse Project, planned as a one-stop service center in Madison to co-locate charity, non-profit and faith-based services to more efficiently assist southeastern Indiana families in need. In Jefferson County, 8% of adults over the age of 16 lack basic literary skills.
Rocking and reading with Trudy
Mine was an early morning shift on Saturday, and Trudy the cat kept me company. I can’t think of anything easier to do for a good cause then sit in a rocking chair and read, though doing so at 3:00 in the morning might be a hardship. There is something about sitting in a window, looking out at the streets of Madison in the early morning that is deeply satisfying. It made me think, “I’d like to get up early enough to see the sun rise over Madison.” And then I thought, “You already do. Thanks Daylight Savings Time.” Then I thought, “I really hate Daylight Savings Time.” Nonetheless, perhaps this week I will make an effort to see the sun rise over Madison, instead of huddling in the cold on my couch with a hot, caffeinated beverage.

– On Sunday, I met up with Jessica Nunemaker and her family at The Red Pepperoni. Jessica is the owner/creator/media empire mogul at little Indiana. If you haven’t checked out this website, go do it now. Jessica travels to small towns all over the state researching the best places to stay, play and eat. She’s written several posts about Madison which you can check out here. She also does a segment on PBS’ show, The Weekly Special, produces a quarterly print magazine, and has a downloadable little Indiana app. The worst part about traveling the state with Jessica? Having to wait for her to get pictures of your food before you can dig in. I’m glad someone’s making that sacrifice for us all.
