I was going to start this new blog hop last week, but there were some gliches and bugs to work out. Here’s hoping second time’s the charm!
Those of you familiar with my blog may know that on Monday’s I like to write about my beautiful hometown of Madison, Indiana. On Madison Monday’s I write about my favorite local hangouts, the people in my town, and the exciting going-on’s.
This feature is inspired by my deep love of my little town, but also by my firm stand as a placist. Yes, this is a word invented by a friend of mine, and as we have defined it (because when you make up a word, you also get to make up the definition) a placist is someone who believes in the importance of place. My friend is a historian of religion, and she studies the importance of place in religious contexts. I’m a sociologist, and I study the importance of place to social life. I have another friend whose a sculptor, and she designs her installations around the physical space where they will be, whether that’s a studio space, a college campus or a brewery. Place has a role to play in fiction, as well, so placists can also be writers and literary theorists. Being a placist crosses disciplinary boundaries, you just have to believe that places matter.
In that spirit, I’m starting a new blog hop called Blog In Place, where everyone can write about the places they live. The internet has brought us all closer together, and the blogosphere is great for the ways in which you can connect to people all over the world. But everyone is writing from somewhere. Blog In Place gives us a chance to hear about where that somewhere is and what it’s like.
Please feel free to e-mail me (youthinktoomuchblog@gmail.com) with your own questions for Blog In Place. To start out with, let’s just hear about the best and the worst thing about the place where you live.
Blog In Place is a weekly meme hosted by You Think Too Much which asks bloggers to tell us about the places they live. Everyone is welcome to join, but please link back to You Think Too Much on your own Blog In Place post and fill out the Linky List below.
Instructions for entering the Blog In Place blog hop:
1. Answer the following prompt on your blog: (Suggestions for future prompts? E-mail them to me at youthinktoomuchblog@gmail.com)
What’s the best and the worst thing about the place where you live?
This week’s answer is from me, but your answer could be here in the future if you send me prompts (youthinktoomuchblog@gmail.com). The best thing about living in my town of Madison, Indiana, is that it’s a place where you can easily build a community around you. I grew up in a small town where “everybody knew everybody.” This has its advantages and disadvantages. Growing up, I couldn’t wait to get as fast and as far away from my small town as I could. But when I got older, I missed that sense of community. The feeling that your family is much larger than just the folks who are related to you by blood.
* Please note: If you do not answer the question and link back to You Think Too Much in a post on your blog, you will be removed from the Linky list.
Happy hopping, folks!
Hello, new follower!
Just posted my Hop post! Please come check it out 🙂
Hi Robyn –
I've been mulling over your best/worst question all day but can't really come to terms with it yet. That's why I haven't posted. I love this idea for a meme/hop, but I just can't narrow down my thoughts about my gorgeous, progressive, sustainability-conscious, community-minded, uber-book-loving, ultra-outdoorsy town today.
I'll try again after sleeping on it.
It's so interesting to see what's most important to you about your own town though: For me, such a small population would be a draw-back, but I was raised in a good-sized university town, so perhaps one's formative experiences do indeed influence our choice of adult abodes.
Thanks for always making me think, and never too much!
Baltimore is a hard city to describe. I'll do my best to give you a glimpse of my world here!
Happy blog travels everyone!
P.S.
